Abstract
Employee retention is a major challenge among alcohol beverage manufacturing firms in developing countries like Uganda. This current study intended to examine the relationship between psychological Capital, employee engagement and employee retention among alcohol beverage manufacturing firms in Uganda. The current study employed a cross sectional survey design with a quantitative approach and was guided by three objectives that included examining the relationship between: psychological capital and employee retention, psychological capital and employee engagement, employee engagement and employee retention as well as examining the mediating effect of employee engagement on the relationship between psychological capital and employee retention. The study was tested on a sample size of 287 employees out of a study population of 569 employees of which 287 employees were for UBL and 282 employees were for Nile breweries. A proportionate stratified random sampling method was used, and data was collected from primary sources using a questionnaire. Reliability of the instrument was tested, and all study variables observed to have Cronbach’s Alpha of .7 and above. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS vasion25 to generate descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Findings from the survey indicated a significant positive association between psychological capital, employee engagement and employee retention. Findings further indicated that all predictors in the model, contributed significantly to employee retention. Furthermore, the mediation results indicated that employee retention is influenced directly by psychological capital or indirectly through employee. The study concluded that it is vital for alcohol beverage manufacturing firms to build psychological capital among employee as it influences employee retention. The study recommends that managers should consider psychological capital as a key resource in improving employee retention levels in their respective firms. Just like other studies, this study was limited to several factors such as low response rate, due to the busy schedules of the target respondents as well as the study being purely quantitative in nature.
