The purpose of the study was to assess the effectiveness of risk management practices in Centenary Bank Uganda Limited. The study's objectives were to examine the effectiveness of risk management practices, to identify the challenges to improve the effectiveness of risk management practices, and to provide strategies to improve the effectiveness of risk management practices in Centenary Bank Uganda Limited. In order to gather information from a sample of 150 staff, the study used a self-administered questionnaire with closed-ended questions. Data analysis was done with SPSS version 25. The study's findings revealed that the effectiveness of risk management practices was moderate with items such as some risks mitigated by simply avoiding them, examining the severity of all potential risk, insuring some of the identified risks, and reactiveness in identifying all its potential risks. The study indicated that challenges do existed such as risks not assessed by using quantitative analysis methods, lack of awareness regarding the importance and benefits of risk management reliance on the output of quantitative data without human judgment, level of internal controls for the risk that it faces, lack of necessary skills and expertise to manage risks effectively, lack of an effective risk management framework (infrastructure, process and policies), difficulty to identify, and classify its main risks, and inadequate risk culture across the entire organization among others. The study further recommended suggested strategies like implement robust risk reporting mechanisms that provide timely and accurate information on risks to key stakeholders including senior management and the board, implement a systematic process to identify, assess and prioritize risks, foster a strong risk culture within the bank that promotes risk awareness, responsibility and accountability at all levels, implement effective risk mitigation strategies and controls to reduce the impact and likelihood of risks, establish a well defined governance structure that clearly defines roles, responsibilities and reporting lines for risk management activities among others. The study suggested that the proposed should be implemented to ensure successful effectiveness of risk management practices.
