Abstract
The study examined the relationship between energy source, quality of electricity supply and growth of MSEs in Mayuge District. This study was guided by the following research objectives; to examine the relationship between energy source and Quality of electricity among MSEs; Quality of electricity and performance of MSEs; and energy sources used and performance of MSEs in Mayuge District. To address the specific objectives, data was collected using self-administered close ended questionnaire. A total sample of 377 randomly selected businesses in Mayuge district was considered. The study used descriptive, correlational and regression analyses to examine relationship between study variables and analysis was done using SPSS version 21. Results revealed a positive and significant relationship between energy sources and performance of MSEs. It was further revealed that quality of electricity supply has a positive and significant relationship with performance of MSEs. Furthermore, both energy sources and quality of energy predicted up-to 37.3% of the variance in the performance of MSEs. Thus, MSEs that use efficient energy sources tend to perform better in various aspects of their operations. Also, businesses that experience better power quality tend to perform better. The study recommends, that business owners ought to find the right combination of solar and hydro that maximizes benefit while minimizing costs. Business owners who feel incapable of getting a solar panel individually can merge resources and procure a group solar panel. Energy companies should consider working on the tariffs as both solar installation is said to be expensive yet hydroelectricity monthly bills are also making power problematic. Thus, government should support the development of small-scale hydroelectric power plants to provide a valuable source of clean and affordable energy for small businesses in rural and remote areas. Government should modify its strategy to promote more solar in the villages where businesses are seasonal and cash flows are not steady so that power does not become a monthly burden.
