Abstract
This study examined the relationship between work life balance, career development and employee retention among international non-governmental organizations in Kampala. The study used a cross sectional design with a quantitative approach to data collection. The unit of analysis was the INGO, a sample size of 113 international non-governmental organizations was used, and 90 NGOs responded giving a response rate of 79.6%. Two employees from lower staff/operational staff were selected to participate. Data collected was entered into SPSS Version 25 and aggregated to get a response for each INGO sampled.
The study found that work life balance is a positive and significant predictor of employee retention. It was found that career development positively and significantly predicts employee retention. The study found that jointly work life balance and career development significantly predict variations in employee retention; with career development being the better predictor.
The study concludes that work-life balance and career development serve as key ingredients for promoting employee retention. This research recommends: enhancing career development; and improving work-life balance to improve employee retention among INGOs.
Future scholars may hence investigate the relationship between work-life balance, career development and employee retention targeting other organizations other than INGOs for purposes of replicability. They may also examine the relationship between work-life balance, career development and employee retention in INGOs focusing on employees across different managerial levels. They may additionally carryout the same research investigating the relationship between work-life balance, career development and employee retention in INGOs but this time using a qualitative approach to data collection. Future scholars too, may investigate the predictors of work life balance and career development as these appear to be significant predictors of employee retention.
