Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between risk assessment, project implementation and sustainability of solid waste management firms. The research problem was that there seems to be inappropriate waste removal, poor infrastructure, legal, social and economic challenges all of which is a clear manifestation of failure to manage waste. Hence the study objectives were: to establish the relationship between risk assessment and sustainability of solid waste management firms, to examine the relationship between risk assessment and Project implementation of solid waste management firms, to analyze the relationship between Project implementation and sustainability of solid waste management firms and to analyze the mediating role of Project implementation in the relationship between risk assessment and sustainability of solid waste management firms.
The study used a cross sectional design approach based on quantitative data. The population was composed of 35 Solid Waste Management Firms in Kampala district and a sample of 32 was selected using a simple random sampling technique. The respondents from the Solid Waste Management Firms involved 1 Firm Manager and 4 technical personnel. This added up to 32 firm Managers and 128 Technical Personnel. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Findings show that risk assessment and sustainability of solid waste management firms are significantly related (r = .588**, p<.01), there is a positive significant relationship between risk assessment and Project implementation of solid waste management firms (r = .498**, p<.01), there is a positive significant relationship between Project implementation and sustainability of solid waste management firms (r = .551**, p<.01). more to that, project implementation does indeed mediate the relationship between risk assessment and sustainability, but not fully. On that basis it was recommended that risk assessment in solid waste management firms should immediately be stepped up, Solid waste management firms need to identify and adopt multiple ways to anticipate and adjust to changes and disruptions, and that Solid waste management firms need to prepare and execute project implementation plans which will enable them ensure sustainability.
