Abstract
Mobile money services have and are developing rapidly in developing economies and their benefits are enormous (Kanobe, Alexander and Bwalya, 2017). Among the developing economies, Malinga and Maiga, (2020) stated that the East African Community (EAC) is a world leader in offering Mobile Money Services hosting more than one quarter of all known such systems in Africa. The aforementioned noted that using mobile technology has seen electronic money transfers rise in recent years. This rise has come with increased perceived security concerns among the customers with a belief that unexpected events may occur as a result of using mobile transactions (Al-Jabri & Ibrahim, 2015). According to Morawczynski (2015), telecom companies globally are increasingly concerned about fraud either conducted by internal staff or fraud perpetrated externally against agents and customers. However, several studies regarding electronic money security issues have been carried out providing information on the multiple protection and mitigation strategies against perceived security (Hassan, Shukur, Hassan and Al-Khaleefa, 2020).
Despite the availability of information on strategies to protect and mitigate against perceived fraud and security, mobile money integrity is a big concern due to transaction security issues and challenges associated with the entire mobile eco system (Mtaho, 2015). This is supported by Bosamia (2015) while identifying and analyzing the different threats and vulnerabilities of a mobile wallet application noted that use of rootkits by attackers to backdoor the mobile payment is a very realistic threat affecting both the customers and providers of the mobile service. Moreover, Castle, (2016) while assessing the security challenges of mobile money in the developing world, stated that where there is money, there must be security, however, with the current mobile eco system, there are security inadequacies that must be addressed.
According to Ystats.com (2017), losses due to online payment fraud were expected to increase double by end of year 2020 making subscribers to start harboring doubts regarding the security of their mobile money wallets. Security threats affecting the mobile network operators directly include but not limited to internal collusion and the technology used to transfer funds (GSMA, 2019).
