Abstract
The purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between work life balance, teachers’ competence, and academic performance of pupils in UPE schools. The study adopted a cross sectional and quantitative design using a sample of 52 out of 62 UPE school. The simple random sampling method was used to select the 52 schools from the sampling frame. Specifically, a lottery method was employed to select the number of schools from Mbarara North to ensure representativeness whereby first the names of schools were written on small pieces of paper (23 pieces), each paper was then folded and put in a box from which the researcher will pick randomly one at a time after every shuffling. The same procedure was done for Mbarara South (39 schools) and schools were the unit of analysis. Only the 49 UPE schools participated in this study because of the Covid-19 effect whereby some schools were not entertaining visitors of all kinds. The data collection tool was tested for reliability and validity. Data was analyzed using SPSS Package version 23 and results were presented based on the study objectives. The study established that there was a positive and significant relationship between work life balance, teachers’ competence and academic performance of UPE schools at 1 percent level (p<0.01). It was also established that work life balance and teachers’ competence explain fifty-seven-point three percent (Adjusted R Square=.58.3). Based on the findings of the study, the board of directors and government should ensure that teachers feel more respected because of their responsibilities in job/at work, generally, prepare work schedule to fulfill both their personal and family commitment, feel they have more to do than they can handle comfortably, teaching loads do not keep them away from their family too much and their responsibility at work do not cause tension/conflict. Teachers always have time to help and support each member of their family. Also teachers should ensure that always update their notes before start of the lessons, they never non-discriminative while teaching, always identify pupil strength and weaknesses and deal with them respectively, do remedial teaching for the learners, allow permission for absence, demonstrate the subject knowledge, mastered the subject content, respect pupils' feelings, and welcome divergent opinions from my learners, use a range of continuous assessments to check for pupil’s understanding, put a lot of emphasis on instructions in class, give Group tasks to pupils for joint solution and ensure that my classroom is organized before a lesson begins.
