| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to examine the performance of the Busega Mpigi express road construction project at the Ministry of Works and Transport, with emphasis on the strategies that can be adopted to improve performance of the road construction project. The study adopted a cross sectional study design and a self-administered questionnaire was used with closed ended questions to collect data from a sample of 50 respondents. The sample included 12 field supervisors, 24 road project construction engineers and 14 project affected personnel. The study found out that the determinants of performance of road construction project include: financial factors, time, quality and expertise, decisions making, stake holders and project complexity. Additionally, challenges that affect performance of road construction projects include; limited cash flow by the organization to contractors, under budgeting, adversarial relationship between the project stakeholders, incompetent contractors to work on the specified tasks, changes in the original design during the execution phase, poor planning and scheduling by the contractors . As such, the study concluded that performance of the road construction project can be improved by project contractor monitoring and evaluation throughout its life cycle, use of quality management system monitors, continuous feedback on operational activities and dialogue with project affected persons to allow construction progress. The study thus recommends that government should emphasize and embark on improving contractor monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, conduct a situational analysis on meetings that would yield suitable results, ensure information generation and dissemination channels both internally and externally and also enhance team collaboration and visibility for improved performance of road construction projects. | |
