- ItemImproving Monitoring Practices in Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (Uwep).(Makerere University Business School, 2020-10-14) Ainembabazi FaithThis study explored the monitoring practices of the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), a government initiative under the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD), with the aim of promoting women’s economic empowerment through access to financial and technical support. The study focused on three key objectives: (i) to examine the monitoring practices currently used in the program, (ii) to assess the challenges affecting monitoring effectiveness, and (iii) to determine strategies for improving monitoring practices. A quantitative research design was employed, and data were collected from 123 MGLSD staff directly involved in the implementation and monitoring of UWEP. The findings of the study revealed that the program has adopted several robust monitoring practices, including the use of formal reports, digital tools, site visits, beneficiary feedback mechanisms, and partnerships with third-party organizations. These approaches align with global best practices and contribute to program transparency and accountability. However, the study also uncovered several persistent challenges, such as inadequate resources, limited technical capacity, difficulties in reaching remote areas, stakeholder disengagement, and the negative impact of corruption and delayed reporting. In response to these challenges, the study identified strategic recommendations to enhance monitoring effectiveness. These include increasing the use of digital technologies, providing continuous training for monitoring staff, allocating more resources, strengthening stakeholder engagement, improving reporting systems, and building partnerships with independent oversight bodies. The study concludes that while UWEP has laid a strong foundation for effective monitoring, deliberate efforts are required to address existing bottlenecks to achieve optimal program outcomes. It further recommends future research into the long-term impact of monitoring on women entrepreneurs’ success and the integration of qualitative insights to enrich program evaluation. Ultimately, improving monitoring practices will not only enhance UWEP’s performance but also contribute significantly to Uganda’s broader development and gender equality goals.

- ItemOrganisation Structure, Cash Flow Management, Community Engagement and Sustainability of Social Enterprises in Kampala District.(Makerere University Business School, 2020-10-28) Ssekaddu AlvinThe purpose of this study was to establish the relationship between organization structure, cash flow management, community engagement and sustainability of social enterprises in Kampala district. It was inspired by the need to increase the understanding of social entrepreneurship by analyzing the social entrepreneurship assumptions in academic discourse, relative to the current practical implications in Kampala district. It was also an attempt to contribute to social entrepreneurship research; a field in that is still relatively new in Uganda. The study adopted a cross sectional design. Since the study intended to test rather than generate theory, it adopted a quantitative approach. It involved descriptive and analytical research designs. The study population consisted of nine hundred thirty (930) CBOs from which a sample of two hundred seventy-four (274) CBOs was drawn using Krejcie and Morgan method. The researcher used stratified proportionate random sampling technique to select social enterprises while one individual at top management level was purposively selected as a respondent for each enterprise. The data collected was edited for incompleteness and inconsistence to ensure correctness of the information given by the respondents, through pretesting and adjustments by the two research supervisors. Variables were coded and Statistical package for social scientists (SPSS) was used for data entry and analysis. The collected data was presented using frequency tables which were analyzed by Factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient and Regression model using SPSS. Analysis and interpretation of the findings revealed that organization structure, cash flow management and community engagement had a positive correlation with sustainability of social enterprises in Kampala district at 0.632, 0.729 and 0.829 respectively. From the regression analysis, organization structure, cash flow management and community engagement had standardized beta coefficients of 0.214, 0.163, and 0.299 respectively. The combined coefficient for all the three variables (Adjusted R Square) is 0.746. The researcher makes recommendations to enhance sustainability of social enterprises that include: hiring a specialized workforce for different tasks; having easy flow of communication; preparing periodic income statements; carrying out activity budgetary reviews; collaborating with local work-force; taking extra steps to promote participation of vulnerable or excluded residents; as they were determined through factor analysis to have the most significant impact on all independent variables.
- ItemDigital Banking, Business Process Design and Customer Satisfaction in Financial Institutions: A Case of Absa Bank Uganda.(Makerere University Business School, 2020-11-09) Batwerinde SamuelIn the continually volatile and turbulent global marketplace, financial services organisations are being confronted by a rapidly evolving landscape. Organisations are recognising the need to begin their digital journeys in order to harness new capabilities that not only improve the customer experience but also provide a streamlined, agile, and profitable business model for the future. This study aimed to examine the relationship between digital banking, business process design, and customer satisfaction in financial institutions with a focus on selected branches of Absa Bank Uganda Ltd. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design drawing on both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Using the Krejcie and Morgan table (1970), a sample size of 384 was selected from a study population of 3538. Data was collected using questionnaires and an interview guide and was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (version 20). Findings reveal a significant positive relationship between digital banking and customer satisfaction; a significant positive relationship between business process design and customer satisfaction; and a significant positive relationship between digital banking and business process design. Since the overall P value (.000b) was less than the 0.05 degree level of significance, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the findings concluded that the explanatory variables (Digital banking and Business process design) have a significant relationship with the dependent variable (Customer satisfaction). The study therefore recommended that Absa Bank Uganda should improve coverage of cybersecurity features and, through advertising and training, enable customers to develop a deep understanding of recent developments, changes, and trends as strategies to achieve digital banking. Absa Bank should provide bank customers with user-friendly online platforms and add more features to digital banking platforms to not only reduce congestion in banking halls but also prevent
- ItemTransformational Leadership Stakeholder Engagement and Success of Non Governmental Organisation Projects.(Makerere University Business School, 2020-11-12) Mbabazi DoreenThis study examined the relationship between intellectual capital, lending strategy, and branch performance among Stanbic Bank branches in the Greater Kampala and Wakiso Region, Uganda. - ItemWorking Capital Management, Competitive Advantage and Financial Performance of Enterprises in Kawempe.(Makerere University Business School, 2021-01-09) Asiimwe HerbertThis study was set out to investigate the relationship between working capital management, competitive advantage, and financial performance of Enterprises in Kawempe. Enterprises make up approximately 90% of Uganda’s private sector and make a significant contribution to employment and income generation for individuals and the government, yet most Enterprises continue to suffer from a high failure rate (25%) (World Bank Enterprise report, 2016). Using a cross-sectional survey, deploying systematic random sampling, a total of two hundred and eighty (280) Enterprises represented by the respondents, giving a response rate 98% (280÷285). From the primary data analysed using a Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20, a multiple correlation coefficient and regression analysis were run. Regression analysis results revealed that both competitive advantage and working capital management have a significant effect on financial performance, while both working capital management and competitive advantage account for 22.5% of the variance in financial performance. It was also established that the level of competitive advantage has a promisingly higher potential in refining the financial performance of Enterprises. The results showed that an enterprise with a superior competitive advantage has stronger bargaining power in financing and is able to increase profitability by controlling the financing scale and cost rationally. This may be attributed to differentiation by the superiority of its products, the value of its brand, the customers’ loyalty, and other relevant factors that enabled it to sell products to many customers at a price higher than the market average, as well as to its cost leadership (cost control) ability. This verification of competitive advantage on the financial performance further suggests that an enterprise can take a cost leadership strategy to sharpen its competitive edge in order to gain more returns. Enterprises can improve the return on assets owned by optimizing their distribution channels and controlling their marketing expenses, reducing overheads, and improving management efficiency. The study also recommends improvements in cash management, inventory management, debtors and creditors management for effective management.
- ItemPromoting Sustainability of Community Water Projects by Plan International in Maracha District.(Makerere University Business School, 2021-01-10) Atukunda Gordon TuryaThe study was carried out to examine the factors influencing the sustainability of the community water projects in Maracha district, the challenges faced and the proposed appropriate suggestions for improving project sustainability in the community water projects in Maracha district. Across sectional research design was used. A descriptive research design was applied and only quantitative data was used. A sample of 84 projects was investigated. The Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) version 20.0 was used for data entry and analysis. It was concluded that, several factors that can cause encumbrances in project sustainability. Notably Institutional structures, Natural factors, project practices and contextual factors should be incorporated in the project implementation process to ensure sustainability. The study revealed that the water projects was affected by addition of new tasks to a project after initiation, alteration of project activities, overruns in terms of cost and time, complexity of the project, and inadequate contingencies. Therefore, members of the community need to interact directly, frequently, in multifaceted ways, generating opportunities and potential for members of a group, who gain a competitive advantage in pursuing their ends. The researcher also concluded that leadership styles predict the level of success in water Projects as significantly revealed by the findings of the study. Further, the study recommends that there is need to appreciate and understand the importance of project sustainability and the key factors that determine sustainability, beneficiaries should be keen to participate in local community projects and offer support during the project design and donors and sponsors should ensure that local communities embrace monitoring and evaluation as a mandatory tool to monitor project progress.
- ItemParticipatory Budgeting, Governance Mechanisms and Service Delivery in Non-Government Organizations in Northern Uganda.(Makerere University Business School, 2021-01-11) Gonahasa, StevenThe purpose of this study was to establish how participatory budgeting through governance mechanisms can improve service delivery. The research problem was that the methods used by NGOs don't directly involve input from the targeted beneficiaries, implying that the provision of social services considered important by an organization would vary with peoples’ needs. Therefore the objectives were to ascertain the relationship between participatory budgeting and service delivery in NGOs, to investigate the relationship between participatory budgeting and governance mechanisms in NGOs, to ascertain the relationship between governance mechanisms and service delivery in NGOs and to determine the moderating role of governance mechanisms in the relationship between participatory budgeting and improved service delivery. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design with a mixed-methods approach basing on qualitative and quantitative data. The sample consisted of 217 NGOs with two respondents from each in addition to ten community leaders. They were selected using a simple random sampling method and data was collected using a questionnaire and an interview guide. Findings show that there is a significant and positive relationship between participatory budgeting and improved social service delivery (r=.505, p<.01), there is a significant and positive relationship between participatory budgeting and governance mechanisms (r=.193, p<.01). It was found that both independent variable and moderating variable can predict 74.8 percent of the variance in service delivery (Adjusted R Square = .748) and that governance mechanisms moderate the relationship between participatory budgeting and service delivery. The study recommends that information necessary for project participants to express their sincere preferences must be provided and communicated well, there should be careful consideration of the cultural norms and values of participants, there is need to carry out further sensitization and education on participatory budgeting and the role of key stakeholders like women and youths needs to be enhanced as they are marginalized.
- ItemProject Planning, Communication, Commitment and Project Success Among Youth Projects in Kampala District.(Makerere University Business School, 2021-02-12) Lugema JosephThe increasing trend of failures among projects in the recent past has attracted a lot of debate as project managers relentlessly try to identify the underlying factors responsible for project success. This study was therefore undertaken with the specific objectives of; establishing the relationship between project planning and project success, identifying the relationship between communication and project success, testing the mediation effect of commitment on the relationship between project planning, communication and project success, as well as examining the relationship between project planning, communication, commitment and project success among youth projects within Kampala. A cross-sectional research study with a quantitative research approach was applied to tabulate data with the help of SPSS version 25. This provided a better interpretation and analysis of the relationship between the study variables. Using a sample size of 208 ongoing youth projects drawn from 52 projects, the study successfully obtained data from 51 projects (91.8%) with an individual response rate of 191 questionnaires (92.7%). The study also applied inferential statistics of correlation and regression analysis. In addition, the questionnaire instrument was tested for validity and reliability ensuring that the study variables returned the minimum acceptable benchmark of 0.7 as guided by Cronbach. From the study, the findings revealed a statistically significant and positive relationship between; project planning and project success, communication and project success. Furthermore, it was observed that commitment mediates the relationship between project planning and project success among youth projects in Kampala. In the same way, commitment is a mediator variable for communication and project success. Moreover, it was also revealed that project planning, communication and commitment are significant predictors for project success with commitment offering a higher variance in project success than communication and planning. In view of the findings in this study, managers within Kampala should endeavor to strengthen project planning through scheduling of tasks, proper allocation of resources and monitoring of the actual implementation of project activities. Similarly, managers need to define and implement a formal communication framework that involves all external and internal stakeholders for different projects. Additionally, it is necessary for project managers to undertake daily monitoring of the project activities to identify warning signs for deviations between planned project activities and the actual level of implementation. The role of commitment should be emphasized through encouraging innovation and risk taking, creating an open environment and planning for team building initiatives. Furthermore, project staffs need to undergo further training to improve their competencies and skills in project planning and communication in order to increase coordination hence improving the likelihood for project success.

- ItemStakeholder Involvement, Community Participation and the Success of Water Projects in Mbarara District.(Makerere University Business School, 2021-03-03) Aturinda JoanThis study examined the relationship between stakeholder involvement, community participation, and the success of water projects in Mbarara District, Uganda. Motivated by persistent water access challenges despite significant investment, the research adopted a cross-sectional quantitative design. Data were collected from 114 water projects using structured questionnaires targeting project management committee chairpersons and beneficiaries. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical regression were used for analysis. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between stakeholder involvement and community participation (r = .407, p < .01), stakeholder involvement and success of water projects (r = .439, p < .01), and community participation and success of water projects (r = .382, p < .01). Regression results showed that stakeholder involvement and community participation jointly explained 23.6% of the variance in water project success, with community participation emerging as a significant predictor (β = .243, p < .01), while stakeholder involvement was not a significant predictor in the final model. The study concludes that community participation is critical for water project sustainability, constant maintenance, and user satisfaction. Recommendations include prioritizing community engagement in planning, decision-making, and maintenance, while considering additional demographic, political, and economic factors for comprehensive project success.
