- ItemInfluence of performance expectancy on commercial farmers’ intention to use mobile-based communication technologies for agricultural market information dissemination in Uganda(Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2016-06) Engotoit, Benard; Mayoka Kituyi, Geoffrey; Bukoma Moya, MusaThis paper to examine the relationship between performance expectancy and behavioural intention to use mobile-based communication technologies for agricultural market information dissemination in Uganda. Design/methodology/approach – A descriptive field survey method was adopted. A total of 302 commercial farmers and agribusiness traders in Eastern Uganda participated in the study from whom data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, factor analysis, correlation and regression analyses were used in the study. Findings – The findings reveal a significant positive relationship between performance expectancy and behavioural intentions to use mobile-based communication technologies for agricultural information access and dissemination. This implies that, commercial farmers’ behavioural intentions to use mobile-based communication technologies for agricultural market information dissemination and access will be influenced if they anticipate mobile-based communication technologies to offer greater performance in their daily transactions. Research limitations/implications – This study was conducted in the context of resource constrained countries particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, however reflecting knowledge from other contexts. The study was conducted with a structured questionnaire being the main data collection tool, and this limited the study from collecting views outside the questions asked in the questionnaire. The variables studied could not be analysed for a long time, given that the study was cross-sectional in nature. Practical implications – The study provides recommendations on how to further boost farmers’ behavioural intentions to use mobile-based communication technologies for agricultural information dissemination. Policy makers need to ensure that policies are put in place that encourage third party software developers and telecommunication companies to provide software products and solutions that are beneficial to the commercial farmers and can enable them complete their agricultural transactions in time. Social implications – The study provides critical literature on the influence o f performance expectancy on commercial farmers’ behavioural intentions to use mobile-based communication technologies for agricultural market information access and dissemination in resource constrained settings. Originality/value – It is noted that farmers in Uganda are slowly progressing to newer mobile information and communication technology tools for market information access and dissemination; however, little is known as to why there is slow adoption of these mobile technologies for agricultural purposes; yet policy makers need to come up with proper strategies to encourage wide scale use of mobile technologies for agricultural market purposes.
- ItemMediating effect of price value on effort expectancy and behavioural intentions to use mobile communication technologies by commercial farmers in uganda(2018-05) B. Moya, Musa; Engotoit, Benard; Mayoka Kituyi, GeoffreyThis study examines the mediating role of Price Value on Effort Expectancy and Behavioural Intentions to Use mobile communication technologies by commercial farmers in Uganda. A cross sectional design and quantitative field survey method were adopted with 302 commercial farmers’ selected using snowball and purposive sampling techniques for the survey. Statistical mediation analysis was carried out using bootstrap mediation tool in Analysis of Moments Structures (AMOS) and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) to test for mediation between the three variables of Price value, Effort Expectancy and Behavioural Intentions to Use. Price Value was found to mediate Effort Expectancy on Behavioural Intentions to use. From the findings, there is need for knowledge creation and market research so as to understand the unique needs of price value perceived by commercial farmers on mobile communication technologies, effort expectancy and behavioural intention on demand side. The study thus provides critical literature and evidence on the mediating role of Price value on relationship between Effort Expectancy and behavioural intention of mobile communication technologies by commercial farmers in resource constrained countries like Uganda. The study further proves that there exists a direct relationship between Price Value and Effort Expectancy; Effort Expectancy and Behavioural intentions to use of Mobile communication technologies. Policy makers need to design mobile phone policies and adopt strategies geared through Price Value, Effort Expectancy and Behavioral Intentions to use. It is also imperative that Policy frameworks support the establishment of robust, cost effective and easy to use Mobile communication technologies in ministry of agriculture to enhance service delivery.
- ItemA mobile-based communication adoption Model for agricultural market information dissemination in Uganda(2016-10-17) Engotoit, Benard; Moya, Musa.B.; Mayoka Kituyi, Geoffrey; Abima, BonfaceThis study proposes a mobile-based communication adoption model for agricultural marketinformation dissemination in Uganda. An extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model was used to guide the study. A survey was conducted on 302 commercial farmers and agribusiness traders in Eastern Uganda using self-administered questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics; Structural Equation Modelling was also used to perform confirmatory tests analyses on study variable relationships and to develop the proposed model. Findings reveal a positive significant relationship between Performance Expectancy and Behavioral Intentions to use; Effort Expectancy and Behavioral Intentions to use; Social influence and Behavioral intention to use; Behavioral intention to use and adoption of mobile-based communication technologies. However, the relationship between affordability of mobile-based communication technologies and behavioral intentions to use and the relationship between facilitating conditions and adoption of mobile-based communication technologies were dropped by the structural equation model because they had negative path coefficients. Effective adoption of Mobile-Based Communication Technologies for Agricultural Information Dissemination in Uganda can be achieved with stakeholders increasing on the functionality and the ease of use of these mobile-based communication technologies; provide nationwide sensitization campaigns on benefits of using mobile-based communication technologies; ensure provision ofaccurate and reliable agricultural market information by using mobile based communication technologies, provide benefits to members of society so as to convince others to use mobile-based communication technologies.
