Abstract
This study examined transformational leadership, project risk management and performance of market construction projects in Uganda. A cross sectional survey design was employed whereby data were collected at a specific point in time. Data was analyzed using SPSS. Given the nature of research objectives, correlation and regression analysis were used. Correlation analysis was performed to test the association between the study variables, while a hierarchical regression analysis was used to test both the individual and combined predictive power of transformational leadership and project risk management on performance of market construction projects.
The study results show that there is a positive and significant relationship between transformational leadership and performance of market construction projects. There was also a positive and significant relationship between project risk management and performance of market construction projects. The results also show that transformational leadership and project risk management explain 53.6% (R2=.536) of the variation in performance of market construction projects.
The study recommends that projects should adopt a transformational leadership style which will encourage employees to explore new opportunities and capabilities to enhance the performance of market construction projects. The government being the funder of most of the construction projects should continuously avail resources specifically for project risk management to improve the performance of market construction projects. Project leaders should also ensure to avoid risks and transfer those that can’t be avoided in schemes like insurance so as to enhance the performance of these projects.
