dc.description.abstractThis study investigates the relationships between innovation ecosystems, innovation capabilities, logistics preparedness, and the sustainability of humanitarian water supply systems in South Western Uganda and West Nile refugee settlements. It addresses the challenge of maintaining water supply systems in these areas by exploring how innovation and localized logistics contribute to long-term viability, using Complex Adaptive Systems Theory as a guide. A cross-sectional survey collected data from 138 water systems managed by 14 organizations in refugee settlements, with responses from project managers, engineers, and community representatives. Analysis using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) revealed that innovation ecosystems significantly enhance localized logistics preparedness, positively impacting sustainability. However, the direct link between innovation capabilities and sustainability was weak, indicating that innovation alone is insufficient without localization. Excessive localization can also create challenges, such as resource constraints and maintenance issues, suggesting the need for a balanced approach that integrates global and local strategies. The findings recommend that humanitarian organizations invest in local partnerships and innovation ecosystems tailored to regional needs to improve the long-term sustainability of water systems. While the study provides valuable insights, its focus on a specific geographic region limits broader applicability, and future research should explore these dynamics through longitudinal studies across diverse humanitarian settings. Overall, the research highlights the importance of both innovation and localized logistics in enhancing the sustainability of humanitarian water supply systems.
