Abstract
The study sought to examine Knowledge Management (KM) practices in Centenary Rural Development Bank Limited (Centenary Bank). The purpose of the study was to examine KM practices in Centenary Bank. The study objectives were to examine the practices of KM in Centenary Bank; to identify challenges of effecting KM practices in Centenary Bank and to identify strategies of improving the KM practices at Centenary Bank. The study adopted across sectional and quantitative design using a study population of 130 and the sample size of 97. The data were tested for reliability and validity, analysed using SPSS version 22 and results were presented based on the study objectives. Basing on study findings, KM helps bank staff to acquire, store and use knowledge management platforms to share new ideas. Continuous learning by staff of Centenary Bank is key with changing market demands, evolving banking standards and system applications. Use of E-learning platforms, online surveys and Teams enables bank staff transfer knowledge within the Organization. Basing on KM challenges, trainings are very expensive for the bank. In addition, information gathered from employees is very hard, since bank information is confidential. There was low employee interaction with management limiting knowledge sharing. Basing on strategies, the Centenary Bank should develop manuals and policies on best practices for KM in the bank, also to partner with experts in knowledge management. And finally, the bank should make use of information system which are real-time, integrated and smart. The bank should create a technology knowledge hub that is accessible to the entire bank and have continuous education of staff through E-learning modules and trainings. Regarding recommendations, the Human Resource Department should encourage staff to embrace use of the E-learning platform and web-based applications like Teams (e-conferencing). Centenary Bank should embrace easy use of technology and have a balance between IT and personal interaction through use of zoom meetings, e conferences, etc. Finally, Centenary Bank should improve top-down management communication, should have more interaction with staff especially with feedback from staff to increase on knowledge sharing. On limitations to the study, the research was cross sectional, meaning that it has a limitation of tracing the long effects of knowledge management practices in Uganda.
