Abstract
The purpose of this study was to establish the relationships between managerial capabilities, resource mobilization and project sustainability among NGO’S in west Nile-Uganda. The study was prompted by the continuity of the projects being very minimal and many of them stagnated prematurely. The study adopted a cross section and descriptive research design using Krejcie and Morgan table (1970) to get a sample size of 127 community water projects that Plan International carried out in the selected districts of West Nile mainly Nebbi, Maracha, Yumbe and Arua. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect the responses. The response rate of 63.5% was sufficient for the study. The data was tested for reliability and validity, analyzed using SPSS and results presented based on the study objectives.
Findings indicated that, there was a positive and significant relationship between managerial capabilities and project sustainability, a positive relationship between resource mobilization and project sustainability and a significant and positive relationship between managerial capabilities and resource mobilization among NGO’s in West Nile Uganda which indicated that an improvement in one variable would lead to improvement of the other. However, managerial capabilities explain a higher predictive potential towards project sustainability. Therefore, it is necessary to put much emphasis on practices that enhance managerial capability if project stakeholders are to intensify project sustainability.
With these findings, the study makes a contribution in providing empirical evidence that managerial capabilities have an indirect effect on project sustainability through resource mobilization; and that the relationship between managerial capabilities and project sustainability can only be significant if there is resource mobilization. Therefore, project stakeholders need to establish the fact that project sustainability rests in the hands of managerial capabilities of the leaders who are willing to resource mobilize as well as ensuring positive attitude towards project sustainability.
