Abstract
This study explores the sustainability of clean water projects implemented by WaterAid Uganda in the Eastern region, with the aim of identifying current sustainability practices, assessing challenges hindering successful long-term impact of implemented water projects , and proposing practical solutions to enhance long-term project impacts. The population constituted of 14 water and sanitation projects across 12 districts in Eastern region of Uganda with participants categorized into project managers, project officers, project implementers, local leaders and beneficiaries. Stratified sampling was employed to ensure that each of these distinct groups (strata) was proportionally represented in the study. This method was chosen to reduce sampling bias and enhance the representativeness of the sample by allowing for more accurate comparisons across diverse stakeholder groups involved in the projects. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires based on a five-point Likert scale. A total of 324 out of 392 respondents completed and returned the questionnaires, resulting in a response rate of 82.6%. Since this response rate exceeds the 75% threshold, it is considered adequate to provide reliable and valid data for analysis and findings. Validity and reliability of the research instrument were confirmed through Content Validity Index (CVI) and Cronbach‟s alpha coefficients, both exceeding acceptable thresholds. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS, applying descriptive and inferential statistics to indicate the extent to which sustainability practices are integrated within WaterAid Uganda‟s projects and to highlight challenges such as inadequate technical capacity and skills, inadequate community ownership and participation and Limited financial resources. Findings from the study revealed that while certain sustainability measures exist, their implementation requires significant strengthening to ensure the long-term success of clean water initiatives. The study therefore recommended enhanced capacity building, improved resource mobilization, fostering public-private partnerships, strengthen maintenance and financial systems and fostering public-private partnerships. These interventions are critical for promoting sustainable access to clean water, ultimately contributing to improved health and well-being in the region.
