Abstract
The case study aimed to examine various sources and challenges of accessing finance by Klan Logistics Ltd and to recommend strategies to enhance their access to finance, using the Pecking Order Theory as the theoretical framework. The research objectives included exploring available financing options, assessing access challenges, and suggesting improvements. The case study focused on Klan Logistics Ltd in Uganda, highlighted that bank loans are the most available and preferred financing source, though grants are perceived as least accessible. Challenges included the unwillingness of financial institutions to bear risks, limited awareness of alternative financial products, high interest rates, and collateral requirements. These issues aligned with broader literature on SME financing challenges and reflected the Pecking Order Theory's emphasis on firms' preference for internal financing first, followed by debt and equity as a last resort.
Recommendations to improve access include diversifying financial sources, focusing on bank loans and microfinance, enhancing creditworthiness, exploring leasing and trade credit, reducing collateral demands, improving financial transparency, investing in financial education, leveraging government support programs, developing a strong business plan, improving negotiation skills, seeking alternative financing options like crowd funding, and strengthening internal financial practices. These strategies are consistent with current trends and literature, emphasizing the need for diversification and improved financial management.
While this case study focused on the logistics sector, future research could compare the challenges and opportunities in accessing finance across various sectors in Uganda, track impact of Digital Financial Services on SME Financing and assess the correlation between SMEs’
Financial literacy levels and their success in securing financing.
