Abstract
The study sought to examine the effect of on-the-job training and team support on employee job performance among fuel pump attendants in Kampala District, Uganda. This study was prompted by the deteriorating performance among fuel pump attendants, yet it is crucial to the overall performance of fuel companies. Drawing on the Cognitive Apprenticeship Theory and Social Support Theory, the study was guided by three specific objectives: to examine the effect of on the-job training on employee job performance, to establish the effect of team support on employee job performance, and the combined predictive effect of on-the-job training and team support on employee job performance. To fulfill the research objectives, a cross-sectional research design was employed, using a quantitative approach with structured questionnaires administered to a sample size of 288 pump attendants in Kampala, and 212 completed and returned. With the aid of regression analysis, the findings revealed that on-the-job training significantly and positively influences employee job performance, particularly in enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness of service delivery. The study further uncovered that team support has a positive and significant effect on employee job performance. The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that both on-the-job training and team support predicted up-to 64.7% of the variance in employee job performance (Adj. R² = .647). The study concludes that structured training and supportive team environments are critical drivers of performance in the fuel retail sector. It recommends that managers of fuel stations invest in continuous training and foster teamwork to improve service quality, safety compliance, and customer satisfaction.
