Abstract
The study was carried out to examine the factors influencing the sustainability of the community water projects in Maracha district, the challenges faced and the proposed appropriate suggestions for improving project sustainability in the community water projects in Maracha district. Across sectional research design was used. A descriptive research design was applied and only quantitative data was used. A sample of 84 projects was investigated. Primary data sources were used and data was collected through administering a close ended questionnaire. The research instrument was examined for its reliability by using Cronbach’s Alpha value. The Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) version 20.0 was used for data entry and analysis.
It was concluded that, several factors that can cause encumbrances in project sustainability. Notably Institutional structures, Natural factors, project practices and contextual factors should be incorporated in the project implementation process to ensure sustainability. The study revealed that the water projects was affected by addition of new tasks to a project after initiation, alteration of project activities, overruns in terms of cost and time, complexity of the project, and inadequate contingencies.
Therefore, members of the community need to interact directly, frequently, in multifaceted ways, generating opportunities and potential for members of a group, who gain a competitive advantage in pursuing their ends. The researcher also concluded that leadership styles predict the level of success in water Projects as significantly revealed by the findings of the study.
Further, the study recommends that there is need to appreciate and understand the importance of project sustainability and the key factors that determine sustainability, beneficiaries should be keen to participate in local community projects and offer support during the project design and donors and sponsors should ensure that local communities embrace monitoring and evaluation as a mandatory tool to monitor project progress.
