Abstract
This study examined the relationship between stakeholder involvement, community participation, and the success of water projects in Mbarara District, Uganda. Motivated by persistent water access challenges despite significant investment, the research adopted a cross-sectional quantitative design. Data were collected from 114 water projects using structured questionnaires targeting project management committee chairpersons and beneficiaries. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical regression were used for analysis. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between stakeholder involvement and community participation (r = .407, p < .01), stakeholder involvement and success of water projects (r = .439, p < .01), and community participation and success of water projects (r = .382, p < .01). Regression results showed that stakeholder involvement and community participation jointly explained 23.6% of the variance in water project success, with community participation emerging as a significant predictor (β = .243, p < .01), while stakeholder involvement was not a significant predictor in the final model. The study concludes that community participation is critical for water project sustainability, constant maintenance, and user satisfaction. Recommendations include prioritizing community engagement in planning, decision-making, and maintenance, while considering additional demographic, political, and economic factors for comprehensive project success.
