dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to establish the relationship between organization structure, cash flow management, community engagement and sustainability of social enterprises in Kampala district. It was inspired by the need to increase the understanding of social entrepreneurship by analyzing the social entrepreneurship assumptions in academic discourse, relative to the current practical implications in Kampala district. It was also an attempt to contribute to social entrepreneurship research; a field in that is still relatively new in Uganda. The study adopted a cross sectional design. Since the study intended to test rather than generate theory, it adopted a quantitative approach. It involved descriptive and analytical research designs. The study population consisted of nine hundred thirty (930) CBOs from which a sample of two hundred seventy-four (274) CBOs was drawn using Krejcie and Morgan method. The researcher used stratified proportionate random sampling technique to select social enterprises while one individual at top management level was purposively selected as a respondent for each enterprise. The data collected was edited for incompleteness and inconsistence to ensure correctness of the information given by the respondents, through pretesting and adjustments by the two research supervisors. Variables were coded and Statistical package for social scientists (SPSS) was used for data entry and analysis. The collected data was presented using frequency tables which were analyzed by Factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient and Regression model using SPSS. Analysis and interpretation of the findings revealed that organization structure, cash flow management and community engagement had a positive correlation with sustainability of social enterprises in Kampala district at 0.632, 0.729 and 0.829 respectively. From the regression analysis, organization structure, cash flow management and community engagement had standardized beta coefficients of 0.214, 0.163, and 0.299 respectively. The combined coefficient for all the three variables (Adjusted R Square) is 0.746. The researcher makes recommendations to enhance sustainability of social enterprises that include: hiring a specialized workforce for different tasks; having easy flow of communication; preparing periodic income statements; carrying out activity budgetary reviews; collaborating with local work-force; taking extra steps to promote participation of vulnerable or excluded residents; as they were determined through factor analysis to have the most significant impact on all independent variables.
