Abstract
The purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between contextual factors, waste recovery and re-use, regulatory mechanisms on business growth in Kampala district. Contextual factors and waste recovery and re-use were the independent variables while the regulatory mechanism was the mediating variable and business growth was the independent variable. The study was guided by the following objectives: To examine the relationship between waste recovery and safe reuse and regulatory mechanisms, waste recovery and safe reuse and business growth, the relationship between contextual factors and regulatory mechanisms, the relationship between contextual factors and business growth, the relationship between regulatory mechanisms and business growth and the mediating effect of regulatory mechanisms on the relationship between waste recovery and re-use, contextual factors and business growth. The study adopted cross sectional survey design to study contextual factors, waste recovery and re-use, regulatory mechanisms on business growth in Kampala district. Primary data was collected using self-administered questionnaire issued to the respondents. The study population consisted of 76 enterprises from the mentioned companies that were involved in waste recovery and safe re-use in Kampala areas with 3 people who were selected from each of the projects. These respondents included planners, implementers and managers. Data was analyzed using statistical package for social scientists (SPSSV 20) package and Pearson correlation coefficient was used to measure the strength of relationships between the variables understudy. The findings obtained revealed that there was a positive and significant relationship between contextual factors, waste recovery and re-use, regulatory mechanisms on business growth in Kampala district. The study established a significant positive relationship between contextual factors, waste recovery and re-use, regulatory mechanisms and business growth in resource recovery and reuse in Kampala district. However, although a positive relationship between the three independent variables was established, waste recovery and safe re-use exhibited a stronger positive relationship with business growth than contextual factors and regulatory mechanisms. The researcher recommends the enactment and implementation of a policy on source separation to enhance and promote waste recycling. This study focused on contextual factors, waste recovery and re-use and regulatory mechanisms which accounted for 15.9% of the business growth in resource recovery and reuse projects in Uganda. More research studies should be done to find out other factors that could enhance effectiveness of business growth of resource recovery and reuse projects in Uganda.
