This study examined the management of collaborative relationship challenges in Uganda’s road construction contracts, using the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) as a case study. The study was motivated by the increasing need for effective collaboration among stakeholders in road construction projects despite the persistent challenges affecting project implementation and performance. Specifically, the study assessed the benefits of collaborative relationships, identified the major challenges hindering effective collaboration, and proposed strategies for strengthening collaborative relationships in road construction contracts. The study adopted a quantitative cross-sectional research design. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to respondents involved in road construction projects at UNRA. The collected data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), employing descriptive statistics to summarize the findings. The findings revealed that collaborative relationships generate significant benefits, including fostering long-term partnerships, promoting innovation, improving time management, enhancing competition, reducing conflicts, strengthening quality control, increasing client satisfaction, facilitating cost control, and promoting risk sharing. However, the study also established that collaborative relationships are constrained by inadequate top management support, insufficient training and guidance, poor communication, and limited stakeholder involvement. Respondents identified stakeholder participation, collaboration workshops, clearly defined responsibilities, long-term partnership orientation, careful partner selection, and joint decision-making as critical strategies for enhancing collaborative relationships. The study concludes that effective management of collaborative relationships is essential for improving the performance and successful delivery of road construction contracts. It recommends strengthening staff capacity through training, developing supportive government policies and regulations, enhancing stakeholder engagement throughout project implementation, and ensuring adequate management commitment and resource allocation to foster successful collaborative relationships in Uganda’s road construction sector.
