Abstract
This study examined the business resilience of Stanbic Bank Head Office in Kampala, Uganda, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic (pp. 1, 11). The primary objectives were to assess the bank's adaptive capacity, examine the operational and financial challenges threatening its resilience, and establish the strategic interventions adopted to mitigate these disruptions (p. 11). Methodologically, the study employed a cross-sectional research design with a quantitative approach (p. 33). Data was gathered through structured, self-administered questionnaires from a sample of 223 employees, selected via simple random sampling from a total population of 594 staff members across various banking departments (pp. 33-35). Statistical analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics within the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) (pp. 35, 37).
The empirical findings revealed that Stanbic Bank demonstrated a very high level of adaptive capacity during the disruptive period (Pooled Mean = 4.42, SD = 0.76), which was largely driven by robust remote-working arrangements, stable online system configurations, and strict adherence to health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) (pp. 38, 40). Conversely, the pandemic posed a moderate overall challenge to operations (Pooled Mean = 3.25, SD = 1.19), characterized by notable staff infection rates, a contraction in revenues and profitability, and a sharp escalation in non-performing loans (pp. 40-42). To counteract these risks, the institution executed highly effective resilience strategies (Pooled Mean = 4.58, SD = 1.23), such as regular premises disinfection, diversification of core business activities, downward adjustments of loan interest rates, and the rapid expansion of self-service digital banking channels (pp. 43-44). Ultimately, the study underscores that technological integration, flexible workforce management, and proactive crisis management frameworks are critical drivers for sustaining institutional functionality and financial stability during major macroeconomic shocks (pp. 10-11, 44).
