Abstract
This study was motivated by reports of persistent failure of construction projects to meet their budgets, time schedule and shoddy work from contractors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between employee commitment, internal control systems and success of public-school construction projects in Mayuge district. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted using a sample of 86 public-school construction projects. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires that were hand delivered to the respondents. Questionnaires from the 71 projects responded to the study which makes the response rate to 82.6% were collected for analysis. The analysis of data involved descriptive statistics for demographics, correlations and regression analyses for answering the hypothesized relationships. The results revealed positive and significant relationships between the following variables; employee commitment and success of public school construction projects, internal control systems and success of public schools’ construction projects. Furthermore, employee commitment and internal control systems were found to account for 73.8% of the variance in project success of public-school construction projects. Thus, the study objectives and hypothesis were met. Based on the study findings, recommendations were advanced regarding the need for projects managers to ensure that their projects employees are committed to their work and having clear internal systems to guide how projects are to be executed so as to enhance successful implementation of projects in public school construction projects.
