Abstract
The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship among transformational leadership, organizational commitment, and employee performance in Ugandan Tea Corporation Limited. The study was guided by four objectives that included; 1) establishing the relationship between transformational leadership and employee performance in Uganda Tea Corporation Limited, 2) establishing the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational commitment in Uganda Tea Corporation Limited, 3) establishing the relationship between organizational commitment and employee performance in Uganda Tea Corporation Limited, 4) finding out the mediating role of organizational commitment on the relationship between transformational leadership and employee performance in Uganda Tea Corporation Limited. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey and a quantitative approach. A sample of 297 employees was taken from a population of 1229 employees at Uganda Tea Corporation. A simple random sampling with a lottery approach was employed to collect primary data from the respondents using a closed survey questionnaire that was anchored on a 5-likert scale. The questionnaire passed both validity and reliability tests. Data was analyzed using SPSS software version 25 to analyze and generate both descriptive and inferential statistics (correlation and regression results). The findings indicated that transformational leadership and organizational commitment have a significant positive association with employee performance. Hierarchical regression results also revealed that transformational leadership and work experience have significant positive influence on employee performance while organizational commitment has an insignificant influence on employee performance. Mediation results indicate that organizational commitment has a partial insignificant mediating effect on the relationship between transformational leadership and employee performance. The study recommends that; The study indicated that transformational leadership enhances employee performance. In this regard, it is recommended that; clear policies concerning transformational leadership should be designed and implemented. High level of individual consideration, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and idealized influence amongst the leaders. This will greatly enhance employee productivity and quality of work among staff. Uganda Tea Corporation should also sensitize its leaders about the great importance of transformational leadership. This will make leaders in the organization to exhibit the true characteristics of such kind of leadership.
