Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the benefits and challenges in implementing finance trust bank’s WASH project and develop strategies to foster its sustainability. This was achieved by adopting a descriptive design in which a sample size of 175 beneficiaries who are customers of finance trust bank that have benefited from the bank’s WASH interventions were engaged. Data was analyzed using SPSS and results were presented based on the study objectives. Study results indicate the project has eased access to clean water, latrines, modern bathrooms and hand washing facilities. This is likely to minimize the spread of water-borne diseases in the rural communities of Uganda. However, study results indicate that the implementation of the WASH project is constrained by poor maintenance of project facilities, limited capacity of the project beneficiaries, unwillingness of the project beneficiaries to support sustainability of the WASH facilities, insufficient monitoring of WASH facilities, population growth, limited follow-up from the bank, lack of financial resources and inadequate policies and strategies to inform sustainability of the interventions. As such, it is recommended that the bank should offer training to the project beneficiaries to acquire skills and competencies needed to sustain WASH facilities. This will enable project beneficiaries to develop and strengthen their skills, instincts, abilities, processes and resources that are vital in maintaining and conserving project facilities in order to benefit from them over a long period of time. In addition, Finance trust bank should integrate sustainability aspects in its WASH project. This can be achieved through embedding sustainability aspects right from the development of the project, developing sustainable supplier practices for the project, emphasizing sustainability designs in all WASH interventions undertaken by the project beneficiaries, setting strategic and tactical sustainability goals for the project as well as sustainability standards to be followed by the clients. This will enable project beneficiaries to mind about sustainability of the WASH facilities for long term benefits to different stakeholders.
