Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationship between financial inclusion, business adaptability, and financial performance among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Nakawa Division, Kampala. The specific objectives include assessing the effect of financial inclusion and financial performance, evaluating the effect of business adaptability and financial performance, and analyzing the effect of financial inclusion, business adaptability and financial performance of SMEs. The study targeted 200 SMEs in Nakawa Division, with a sample size of 132 enterprises selected through stratified random sampling across Clinics, IT Solutions, Business consultants and Schools to ensure representation. A cross-sectional research design was employed, utilizing a quantitative approach to establish causal relationships among variables. Primary data was collected using a structured questionnaire featuring a 5-point Likert scale to gauge respondents' attitudes and perceptions regarding financial inclusion, business adaptability and financial performance. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were ensured through expert review and pretesting, achieving a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient above 0.7. The study found that both financial inclusion and business adaptability positively influence the financial performance of SMEs. Moreover, the effect of these two factors further enhances financial performance, indicating a synergistic relationship between them. Based on the findings, it is recommended that SMEs enhance their financial inclusion efforts by engaging with financial institutions to access credit and other financial services. Additionally, fostering business adaptability through training and capacity-building initiatives will better equip SMEs to navigate changing market conditions and improve their overall financial performance. Policymakers should also consider implementing supportive policies to facilitate access to finance and promote adaptability among SMEs.
