Abstract
Water is one of the key factors for sustainable development in every country. Sustainability of water projects is associated with continuity of water projects operating for the projected period of time after the closure and withdraw of funds by the intended funders. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between Community participation, Choice of Technology and Sustainability of Rural Water Projects in Luweero District. a quantitative research design coupled with a cross-section approach. Correlational and regression designs were adopted to explain the relationship between the explanatory variables (Community Participation and Choice of technology) on Sustainability of Rural water projects. The researcher adopted a census study covering all the six (6) water facilities provided by PLAN International in Zirobwe Subcounty (Units of Analysis), and 163 respondents (unity of inquiry) participated in the study out of the involved all the stakeholders. A Purposive sampling technique was used to select respondents. Primary data was collected using an administered questionnaire, and the collected data was refined, coded and analyzed using SPSS Version 23.0 to give more meaning to the findings of the study. The study findings revealed a moderate positive relationship between Community Participation and Sustainability of Rural Water Projects, and a strong positive relationship between Choice of Technology and Sustainability of Rural Water Projects. Furthermore, the explanatory variables (Community Participation and Choice of Technology) were found important in explaining the variations in the Sustainability of the Rural Water Projects in Luweero District. Choice of technology was a better predictor of the sustainability of the rural water projects than community participation as used in the conceptual model. The study therefore recommended that there should always be Community mobilization under taken before and during water project implementation, cooperation be promoted among the key stakeholders, continuous monitoring of the water projects be conducted in form of frequent facilitation and support, community participation aspects be focused on, and there always should be use of modern, simple and appropriate technology which is accepted by the community members, simple to service and maintain so as to reduce on the costs incurred by the stakeholders during maintenance. The project implementers should try to adopt modern technology through increased budgetary allocations while funding and financing water projects in rural areas.
