The study was guided by three objectives which included; to examine the relationship between firm characteristics and financial performance of MSEs in Mbarara City, to examine the relationship between risk management techniques and financial performance of MSEs in Mbarara City and to establish the combined effect of firm characteristics, risk management techniques on financial performance of MSEs in Mbarara City. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design with both quantitative approach of data collection and analysis. The study involved a sample size of 13,999MSEs in Mbarara City. A sample size of 372 MSEs selected using probability sampling techniques. Data from the field were processed and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS v26). Given the nature of the research objectives and hypotheses, parametric tests were used as the main analysis. Specifically, Pearson correlation was conducted to test the associations, while hierarchical regression was performed to test the contribution effect of each variable in explaining financial performance. Findings from the study indicate all firm characteristics and risk management techniqueshave a significant relationship with financial performance. All the variables under study explained 63.2% of the variations in financial performance of MSEs. Therefore, MSEs in Mbarara should strive to establish themselves for a longer duration in the market, leveraging their experience and reputation to improve financial performance over time. Secondly, MSEs should pay attention to workforce planning and optimization, ensuring that the number of employees aligns with business needs and productivity goals.
