Abstract
This study investigated the relationships between digital infrastructure, regulations, worker skills, and the sustainability of gig work in Uganda. The study addressed three specific objectives including: to determine the relationship between digital infrastructure and sustainability of gig work in Uganda, to establish the relationship between regulations and sustainability of gig work in Uganda, and to investigate the relationship between worker skills and sustainability of gig work in Uganda. Employing a cross-sectional survey research design analyzed data from 318 ride hailing drivers in Kampala. Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis was run to test the objectives one and two, while linear regression analysis was used for to examine objectives three. The findings revealed positive and significant correlations between digital infrastructure, regulations, worker skills, and the sustainability of gig work in Uganda. Collectively, these factors accounted for 11.8% of the variance in gig work sustainability, with worker skills emerging as the strongest predictor compared to digital infrastructure and regulations. The study recommends that gig workers prioritize developing soft and technical skills to enhance work sustainability, leverage reliable digital platforms and secure payment systems to improve efficiency, and advocate for regulatory frameworks that establish clear controls, align with societal norms and values, and promote gig work legitimacy through fair policies. Further research is needed to identify additional predictors of gig work sustainability’
