A sample of 377 University graduates from Makerere, Kyambogo and Mbarara University of Science and Technology were investigated using stratified sampling strategy. The respondents were randomly selected and a cross sectional research design was adopted which involved descriptive, correlation, regression and mediation approaches. The study revealed that there is a significant positive relationship between; human capital and self-employment, human capital and psychological capital, psychological capital and self –employment. On the other hand, regression results reported that both variables predict 48.4% variance in self-employment among university graduates. The study further confirmed that psychological capital plays a mediating role in the relationship between human capital and self-employment among University graduates in Uganda. Therefore, the study recommends that Universities should develop programmes that will empower students to develop entrepreneurial knowledge and skills to enable students initiate businesses and thus attaining self-employment before and after graduation. It is also recommended that universities should organize activities such as business plan competitions, weekly open day markets as well as students expositions to boost students’ self-efficacy in starting and running business ventures. Lastly, it is recommended that a longitudinal study be carried out to understand the gradual interplay of human capital, psychological capital and how these influence self-employment among university graduates. | en_US |
