Abstract
This study is intended to examine the association between project leadership, conflict management capability, and project risk management in road construction projects in Central Uganda. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted using 120 road construction projects out of a sample size of 103 projects that were contacted. The unit of analysis was a road construction project, and the unit of inquiry included project managers, site engineers, and project consultants. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires that were hand-delivered to the respondents. Overall, 82 usable questionnaires from the 103 projects representing 79.6% response rate were collected for analysis. The analysis of data involved descriptive statistics for demographics, correlations, and regression analyses for answering the research questions in accordance with the set objectives. The results revealed positive and significant relationships for the following objectives: project leadership and project risk management, conflict management capability, and project risk management. Furthermore, project leadership and conflict management capability were found to account for up to 41.2% of the variance in project risk management. Based on the study findings, recommendations were advanced regarding the need to strengthen project leadership and conflict management capability in order to improve project risk management.
