Abstract
This study examines the relationship between team learning behavior, stakeholder engagement, and project sustainability in Kiruhura District, Uganda. The objectives were to: examine the relationship between team learning behavior and project sustainability of projects, examine the relationship between stakeholder engagement and project sustainability of projects and examine the combined relationship between team learning behavior, stakeholder engagement and project sustainability of projects. The study employed a cross-sectional survey, using a quantitative research approach. Data was collected from 32 projects using self-administered questionnaires. Data was analyzed using SPSS v.25 to obtain frequencies, and inferential statistics for data interpretation and analyzed using correlation and regression analysis. Results established a strong positive relationship between stakeholder engagement and project sustainability, highlighting the importance of integrating stakeholder expectations and values into project management. Team learning behavior also had a positive effect on sustainability, suggesting that a culture of continuous learning and knowledgesharing within project teams enhances the capacity to adapt and solve problems. More so, the findings revealed that stakeholder engagement and team learning behavior together accounted for 36.1% of the total variation in project sustainability (Adjusted R² = .361). Team learning Behaviour (B = .455, p<.05) was a better predictor, followed by Stakeholder Engagement (B = .304, p <.05) of Project Sustainability. The study concludes that for WASH projects to be sustainable, project managers should promote Team learning behavior and stakeholder engagement at all levels during project initiation, planning, execution and closure. The study recommends that project managers should enhance stakeholder engagement by fostering regular consultations and integrating stakeholder input into project planning. Strengthening team learning processes, especially through context support, can further contribute to project sustainability. Additionally, continuous monitoring and evaluation systems should be implemented to assess the ongoing impact of stakeholder engagement and team learning behavior on project sustainability. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how project managers can improve the long-term success of projects in Uganda and similar settings.
