Abstract
The main purpose of the study was to evaluate the relationship between managerial capability, community engagement, and project sustainability in Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Projects in Greater Kampala. The research problem was that UWEP projects are threatened with low levels of sustainability, given the evidence which shows that out of 28 projects in Mukono District which were started in 2017, only 11 are still in existence and even those in existence are on the brink of failing, with over 88% also failing in Wakiso District. The objectives were to examine the relationship between managerial capability and project sustainability, to examine the relationship between community engagement and project sustainability, and to examine the effect of community engagement and managerial capability on project sustainability. The study was based on a cross-sectional study design with a quantitative approach. A sample of 254 projects was selected and questionnaires distributed to key respondents therein, using a simple random sampling method. Findings revealed that managerial capability and project sustainability are both significantly and positively related (r =.471**, p<.01), there was a significant positive relationship between community engagement and project sustainability (r=.372, p<.01); and that both managerial capability and community engagement predict 17 percent of the variance in project sustainability (Adjusted R Square = 0.170). It was recommended that the projects need to be reviewed with a view to removing incompetent managers and putting in place those who are not only technically capable to perform their roles, but who have the knowledge and experience, strategic thinking and shared vision to boost the chances of lasting results. The review of management competency needs to be undertaken on a regular basis to identify capability gaps, and that management should ensure community engagement in its projects.
