Abstract
Women empowerment is very vital global development agenda of the 21st century and this has made the aspect of perceived women empowerment to attract significant academic attention. The current study sought to establish the mediating role of financial literacy on the relationship between social mobilization and perceived women empowerment. Specifically, the study sought to establish the relationship between social mobilization and perceived women empowerment; to determine the relationship between social mobilization and financial literacy and to determine the mediating effect of financial literacy on the relationship between social mobilization and perceived women empowerment in Dream Team VSLA in Mukono District. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design and data was collected at one point in time. A sample size of 108 SACCO members was scientifically drawn from a target population of 150 SACCO members using Krejeie and Morgan's table for sample size determination. The study was anchored on the empowerment theory to explain the hypothesized relationship between the study variables. The research instruments were analyzed for validity using Content Validity Index and reliability using Cronbach Alpha Coeffient. The analytical results reveal that the measurement instruments were valid and reliable. The data was entered in SPSS software version 25 for analysis. Data was analyzed using descriptive. The study was analyzed for descriptive analysis, regression and correlation. The study findings reveal a statistically significant relationship between social mobilization and perceived women empowerment. The findings of the study also reveal that financial literacy enhances perceived women empowerment. The study further reveal that financial literacy mediates the relationship between social mobilization and perceived women empowerment. The study recommends that the management of SACCOS should provide financial literacy programs to SACCO members and mobilization of the community so as to enhance perceived women empowerment. The study adopted a cross sectional research design and may not portray a true picture of the changes in financial literacy and social mobilization and how they enhance perceived women empowerment and hence further scholars should replicate the study findings using a longitudinal research design.
