Abstract
This study assessed production efficiency management practices at Hariss International Limited (Riham Group), one of Uganda’s leading fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturers. The research sought to evaluate the production-efficiency practices implemented, examine operational challenges affecting efficiency, and propose strategies for improvement. Anchored on the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Lean Management frameworks, the study employed a cross-sectional descriptive design with a quantitative approach. Data were collected from a sample of thirty-five (35) respondents drawn from production-related departments at the Tula plant, of which thirty-two (32) returned completed questionnaires, representing a 91.4 percent response rate. A structured Likert-scale questionnaire was administered, and the data were analysed using descriptive statistics such as means, frequencies, and standard deviations. The findings revealed that Hariss International has adopted several production-efficiency practices, including preventive maintenance, quality-control checks, employee involvement in continuous improvement, and material-waste reduction programs. However, challenges persist in the form of frequent equipment breakdowns, resource constraints, scheduling delays, and limited motivation and interdepartmental communication. These constraints often disrupt workflow and reduce productivity. The study further established that continuous technical training, process automation, departmental coordination, and employee-recognition programs are critical strategies for improving efficiency. The study concludes that while Hariss International has made significant progress in institutionalizing Lean–TPM practices, achieving sustainable operational excellence requires strengthening maintenance planning, investing in modern technology, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The research contributes to both academic and managerial understanding of production-efficiency management in Uganda’s manufacturing sector and offers practical insights applicable to other FMCG firms seeking to enhance productivity, competitiveness, and sustainable growth.
