Abstract
This work was guided by three specific objectives that included: evaluating the practices contributing to effective employee training at ROTOM; identifying the challenges affecting the training effectiveness and to establish the mechanisms for improving the program. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design and as such, data was collected once without being repeated. A quantitative approach employing questionnaires to collect data was adopted. A total of 65 questionnaires were administered to employees of all levels in ROTOM with a response rate of 87% was realised. A descriptive analysis of the data was undertaken using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPPS). The results show that the training program at ROTOM can be fostered by the competence of trainers (Mean=4.26, SD=.495), appropriate training methods (Mean=4.25, SD=.389), and fairness in selecting of the trainees ((Mean=3.95, SD=.575) The main factors that affected the program effectiveness include inadequate funding, failure to align training to objectives of organisation, and biasness in selecting the trainees. In terms of mechanism to improve training program, it was advanced that, ROTOM should continue employing competent trainers, undertake an effective training needs analysis, evaluate the program, and adequately fund the program. Other contribution and suggestions for further work have been presented.
