dc.description.abstractPurpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between project design choices, bid evaluation practices, and the performance of construction projects in Wakiso District, Uganda. It seeks to understand how these procurement procedures influence project outcomes, particularly in terms of quality, timeliness, and client satisfaction. Study design/methodology/approach: A cross-sectional survey research design was employed, utilizing quantitative methods to gather data from 132 ongoing and completed government construction projects in Wakiso District. The study involved a structured questionnaire administered to procurement staff and contracts committee members. Statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical regression, were conducted to examine the relationships between the study variables. Findings: The findings reveal a significant positive relationship between project design choices and construction project performance, indicating that effective design methodologies enhance project outcomes. Additionally, bid evaluation practices were found to significantly influence performance, with a focus on financial soundness, tendered price and bidder compliance leading to improved construction project performance. The regression analysis indicated that both design choices and bid evaluation practices collectively account for 52.5% of the variance in project performance, with bid evaluation practices exerting a stronger influence. Originality/value: This research contributes to the understanding of procurement processes in the construction sector of Uganda, highlighting the importance of strategic project design and rigorous bid evaluation practices. The insights provided can inform policymakers, project owners, and practitioners in improving project performance and addressing challenges the evaluation and award of construction projects in Uganda and particularly in Wakiso district.
