dc.description.abstractThis study examined the relationship between strategic orientation, stakeholder management and success of water projects in central Uganda. The objectives were to examine; relationship between strategic orientation and success of water projects; strategic orientation and stakeholder management; stakeholder management and success of water projects; and strategic orientation, stakeholder management and success of water projects. The study also tested the mediating effect of stakeholder management in the relationship between strategic orientation and project success. This was a cross-sectional research design along with a quantitative research approach. A sample of 32 water projects was used from a population of 35 water projects in central Uganda. Data was obtained from project managers, project supervisors, project community coordinators and project beneficiaries using a structured questionnaire. SPSS. (v20) and Med-Graph system were used to analyse data. The study found a positive relationship between strategic orientation and success of water projects. There was a positive relationship between strategic orientation and stakeholder management. The study found a positive relationship between stakeholder management and success of water projects. The study established that strategic orientation and stakeholder management were significant predictors of project success. The better predictor of project success was found to be strategic management. Moreover, stakeholder management was a partial mediator in the relationship between strategic orientation and project success. The study concludes that strategic orientation and stakeholder management are crucial for project success. When projects direct more attention towards stakeholder management compared to strategic orientation, they will increase the extent to which they finish in time, budget, scope and fulfil beneficiary’s satisfaction. The study recommends increased consultation & dialogue with different stakeholders; intensifying stakeholder identification exercise; adaptive capacity; increased market orientation and technology intensity.
