    EXAMINING THE SAFETY MANAGEMENT PRACTICES USED AT ROKO CONSTRUCTION COMPANY

    The study examined the safety management practices at Roko Construction Company. Despite the efforts to enhance safety management by the National Occupational Safety and Health Act (2006) in Uganda, Roko Construction sites continue to experience high rates of accidents, injuries, and fatalities, which not only lead to loss of life but also significant economic costs. The study was guided by the specific objectives which were to examine the causes of accidents at Roko Construction Company, the roles of safety management regulations at Roko Construction Company, and the benefits of health and safety management practices at Roko Construction Company. The study employed a cross sectional research design with quantitative approach. A total of 108 closed ended questionnaires were used to collect data. The research managed to access and collect data from the sampled 108 employees at Roko construction company. The study therefore achieved response rate of 100% from the administered questionnaires. Cross tabulations were used to describe the demographic characteristics of the respondents. Data was analyzed using SPSS to capture sample characteristics and perception of the respondents in regard to study objectives. The study established that lack of supervision and construction chemical substance abuse, defect equipment and failure to orient staff about how to handle equipment cause accidents at Roko Construction Company. However, respondents were not sure about how the lack of a safety culture in the workplace cause of accidents at Roko Construction sites. The human, environmental, physical, equipment and organization factors as mentioned caused risks of accidents at construction sites for the Company. Findings from the study show that the company implements safety management regulation to determine the causes and prevent future occurrences of accidents at construction site. However, results from the same table also revealed that the company does not implement occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulation (Mean = 2.17, SD = 43.5). This involves update safety policies and procedures based on new information, incidents, or changes in regulations at site. Furthermore, the results showed that the majority of respondents (Mean = 2.91, SD = 40.7) were not sure whether the company has policies such as OSH management policies, standard to set targets for ensuring safe working environment at Roko Construction site. Findings further revealed that the safety practices such as personal protective equipment, regular inspection, safe material handling and emergency preparedness are essential to protect workers and ensure a safe working environment at construction sites. The Company that prioritizes safety practices, not only protect their workers but also create amore positive and satisfying work environment, leading to higher employee retention and productivity. However, the findings further indicated that respondents were not sure whether safety practices increase satisfaction of employees with their jobs (Mean = 2.81, SD = 41.7). It was concluded and recommended that in order to minimize the number of accidents in the Roko Construction Company, all parties, including regulators; consultants, contractors, and workers need to be fully committed in ensuring the safety and health at the Construction site are implemented accordingly. When Construction site workers are hurt in an accident, it affects not just their lives and livelihoods, but also the project progress and the firms’ future.
