This is a master's thesis.
Developing countries, including Uganda, experience lower grid electricity consumption rates. This can hinder household welfare, socio-economic and sustainable development. Thus, the purpose of the study is to examine the effect of household energy needs, price of energy substitutes and grid reliability on household grid electricity consumption in Uganda. The study employed a hierarchical, robust linear regression analysis using data from the 2019/20 Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) to estimate the predictors of grid electricity consumption among households. The results indicate that cooking and biomass expenditure (price) are significant predictors of household grid electricity consumption in Uganda, unlike grid reliability. Additionally, household income, household location, household size, and the interaction between household location and household cooking energy needs significantly influence household grid electricity consumption. Thus, the study findings suggest that continuous improvement of household income, household adoption of clean cooking and enhancement in the economic attractiveness of electricity can contribute to sustainable grid electricity consumption among households in Uganda.
