Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between supportive work environment, employee commitment, and employee engagement among secondary schools’ teachers in Wakiso district. The study was based on the following objectives: to examine the relationship between a supportive work environment and employee commitment, to examine the relationship between a supportive work environment and employee engagement, to examine the relationship between employee commitment and employee engagement and to examine the mediating role of employee commitment in the relationship between supportive work environment and employee engagement.
A cross sectional research design and quantitative approach were adopted, with a sample size of 127 respondents of which 114 responded indicating a response rate of 89.76%. Data was analyzed using SPSS v23 as per the study objectives. The questionnaire was tested for reliability and validity. Findings revealed a significant and positive relationship between; supportive work environment and employee commitment, supportive work environment and employee engagement, employee commitment and employee engagement. Overall, supportive work environment and employee commitment predict 31.2% of the variance in employee engagement.
The results further revealed that employee commitment partially mediates the relationship between supportive work environment and employee engagement. The study recommended that secondary schools should provide an environment that support the activities of the school, through organizational support, supervisory support and peer group interaction. More so, strengthening employee commitment enhance employee engagement, in terms of vigor, dedication and absorption. The fact that the predictors in the model explain 31.2%, further studies may be conducted to explain the remaining variation (68.8%) in the level of employee engagement using different research designs.
