Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between work environment, career development, Psychological Capital, and teacher turnover intention in public secondary schools in Nakawa Division. The study was guided by the following objectives; to examine the relationship between work environment and teacher turnover intention in public secondary schools in Nakawa Division, to examine the relationship between career development and teacher turnover intention in public secondary schools in Nakawa Division, to examine the relationship between psychological capital and teacher turnover intention and to examine the mediating role of psychological capital on the relationship between work environment, career development and teacher turnover intention. A cross-sectional survey research design was used for the study. The sample of the study composed of 284 teachers working in Public secondary schools in Nakawa Division. In the study, the scale of work environment; the scale of career development, Psychological Capital and the scale of teacher turnover intention were used. Data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), where information was gathered to generate descriptive and inferential statistics. According to the findings, work environment and teacher turnover have a negative relationship, career development and teacher turnover intention have a positive relationship with teacher turnover intention, and Psychological Capital and teacher turnover intention have a negative relationship. The study recommends the following; in regards to work environment and teacher turnover intention, the Ministry of Education and Sports should improve on the school infrastructure by providing teaching aids, a better pay and involving teachers in the making of some decisions, career development strategies like induction training, encouraging upgrading of staff should be employed by the public schools so that the teachers do not have not look further for better opportunities, in order to improve the psychological capital of the teachers, the school heads can authentically recognize and celebrate employees’ achievements and contributions.
