dc.description.abstractThe study investigates the multifaceted nature of energy access in rural Uganda, focusing on Masindi District. It employs the Multi-Tier Framework (MTF) to assess energy access, considering factors such as capacity, availability, reliability, quality, affordability, health, safety, and formality. The research examines the relationship between household income and energy utilization, the impact of electricity access on energy use choices, and household perceptions and willingness to transition between energy tiers. Data was collected from 210 households in Masindi District using a stratified random sampling technique. The study employed quantitative analysis, including comparative analysis, descriptive statistics, and the application of the MTF to categorize households into distinct energy access tiers. The findings reveal that a majority of households have access to electricity, primarily through the national grid and off-grid sources. However, most of these households are in the lower tiers of energy utilization, relying heavily on biomass for cooking. The quality and reliability of electricity access are not uniform, with some households experiencing frequent outages and voltage fluctuations. Affordability remains a significant barrier to accessing electricity, particularly for low-income households. The study also finds that household income significantly influences energy utilization, with higher-income households having greater access to and utilizing more energy than lower-income households. Access to electricity impacts household energy use choices, with households with electricity access being more likely to use modern energy sources for lighting, appliances, and cooking. The majority of households are willing to transition to a higher tier of energy access if it is feasible and affordable. The study concludes that addressing energy access disparities in rural Uganda requires a multi- pronged approach that includes expanding grid connectivity, and promoting off-grid renewable energy solutions. In addition, the study recommends policies to enhance affordability of electricity and clean cooking technologies, and raising awareness about the benefits of transitioning to higher energy tiers.
