Abstract
The study sought to establish the relationship between organizational culture, knowledge management and hospital performance in Kampala. The study was based on four objectives; To examine the relationship between organizational culture and Hospital Performance; To establish the relationship between organizational culture and knowledge management; To examine the relationship between knowledge management and Hospital Performance and to examine the mediating role of knowledge management in the relationship between organizational culture and hospital performance. A cross-sectional survey design that applied a quantitative approach to the study was adopted to capture views, attitude and opinions of various hospitals. Questionnaires were used to source quantitative information. The population of the study was 35 registered Private Hospitals Kampala and the sample size was of 32 determined by applying Krejcie and Morgan (1970). Simple random sampling method was used for selection of hospitals and data was analyzed using SPSS to establish the reliability, correlation and regression results. The correlation results showed an existence of a significant and positive association between organizational culture and hospital performance in Kampala (r=.424, p<0.01). There was a significant and positive association between organizational culture and knowledge management (r=.672, p<0.01) and then, there also existed a significant and positive association between knowledge management and hospital performance of private hospitals. (r=.448, p<0.01). The regression results however revealed that F=13.131, Sig<0.05 in relation to independent variables of organizational culture and knowledge management which affirmed the statistical significant predictability of these variables to be associated with the dependent variable of Hospital performance. Regression results further indicated knowledge management (β= .297, t=2.363, p<.05) and organizational culture (β=.224, t=1.780, p<.05). Regression results further indicated that a combined effort of variables of organizational culture and knowledge management was capable of predicting 21% of variance in Hospital Performance of private hospitals (Adjusted R Square=.210). However, knowledge management was found to be the most significant predictor of hospital performance of private hospitals. Mediation results revealed that knowledge management significantly mediates the relationship between organizational culture and hospital performance of private hospitals. (Sobel z-value= 2.272943, P= 0.002303). Consequently, the researcher recommended that private hospital administrators, owners and concerned stakeholders in Kampala should adopt knowledge management strategy in running their hospitals so that they can gain improved performance. Knowledge management strategies to be adopted are: knowledge sharing, knowledge acquisition, knowledge creation and knowledge implementation.
