    Makerere University Business School Designing Strategies to Enhance Project Beneficiaries’ Participation in St. Peter Child Development Centre Lugazi.

    The aim of the study was to develop strategies to improve beneficiary participation in projects. It was conducted at the St. Peter Child Development Centre in Lugazi, guided by specific research objectives, including: assessing the level of beneficiary participation, identifying challenges faced by beneficiaries, and designing strategies to enhance their participation at the Centre. The literature review drew from a range of authors, scholars, and researchers. The study utilized a cross-sectional and descriptive research design to gather data from both the project beneficiaries and implementers, using a variety of data sources. The total population consisted of 365 individuals, as indicated in the updated 2023 Project Profile Report, with a sample size of 186 participants selected for the study. Probability sampling techniques were used, and primary data was collected through self-administered questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed descriptively using means and standard deviations. The study’s findings revealed that beneficiary participation is crucial for the success of the project, particularly in fostering a sense of ownership and meeting the actual needs of the community. Key challenges identified included poverty, power imbalances, lack of trust, communication barriers, financial constraints, limited access to resources, cultural and language differences, as well as political and bureaucratic hurdles, and inadequate infrastructure and technology. The study also highlighted several strategies to enhance beneficiary participation, including stakeholder mapping, promoting accountability and transparency, capacity building, and developing clear communication strategies. It was concluded that prioritizing effective needs fulfillment is essential for fostering beneficiary participation. Addressing the challenges faced by beneficiaries requires lobbying for more funding, improving communication, ensuring accountability, and enhancing ethical standards and resource utilization. Furthermore, the study emphasized that effective strategies involve encouraging accountability, recruiting qualified employees, conducting regular stakeholder mapping, and improving communication channels to enhance project efficiency. Based on the findings, the study recommended that beneficiary involvement should be prioritized, additional resources should be allocated, inclusive decision-making processes should be promoted, and investments in capacity building should be made to further enhance beneficiary participation in the project.
