ICT Adaptability, Communication Management and Performance of Virtual Teams in Government Parastatals.
(Makerere University Business School, 2025-10-23) Tuhairwe, Moreen
This study examined the impact of ICT adaptability and communication management on the performance of virtual teams in government parastatals in Kampala District. The research was motivated by the growing reliance on virtual teams within the public sector, driven by technological advancements and the need for flexible, cost-effective service delivery. Despite the potential benefits, there remains limited empirical evidence explaining how ICT adaptability and communication management contribute to virtual team effectiveness, especially in the context of developing countries. To bridge this gap, the study sought to determine the individual and combined effects of ICT adaptability and communication management on virtual team performance. The specific objectives were to assess the relationship between ICT adaptability and virtual team performance, the link between communication management and team performance, and the combined influence of ICT adaptability and communication management on the performance of virtual teams. A cross-sectional quantitative research design was employed, targeting a population of 150 virtual teams drawn from 20 public parastatals in Kampala. Using Krejcie and Morgan’s formula, a sample size of 108 virtual teams was selected, yielding 324 respondents comprising top management, ICT staff, and operational employees. Data was collected using structured, self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS version 26.0. Reliability tests yielded Cronbach’s Alpha values above 0.80 for all study variables, confirming high internal consistency. Findings revealed statistically significant positive relationships between ICT adaptability and virtual team performance and between communication management and team performance. Regression analysis showed that ICT adaptability and communication management jointly accounted for about a third of the variance in team performance. These results highlight the critical role of both ICT infrastructure and structured communication in enhancing team outcomes. Based on these findings, the study recommends that government parastatals invest in scalable and user-friendly ICT systems, implement comprehensive user training programs, and establish clear communication strategies, including feedback and monitoring mechanisms. Such initiatives will not only boost task completion and cohesion but also improve stakeholder satisfaction and overall public service delivery.
