    Board Governance, Distributor Competence and Perceived Performance of Joint Medical Store, Uganda.

    The success of a distribution organization whether private or public, depends on the competency of its leaders, suppliers, and distributors. This study sought to establish the relationship between board governance, distributor competence and perceived performance of Uganda’s Joint Medical Stores. The specific objectives were to determine the: relationship between board governance and perceived performance of Joint Medical Stores; relationship between distributor competence and perceived performance of Joint Medical Stores and; predictive power of board governance and distributor competence on perceived performance of Joint Medical Stores. The study followed a cross-sectional research design and structured questionnaires were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics were estimated and Factor analysis was also carried out prior to model estimation. Pearson correlation and regression analysis were used to examine the relationship between the study variables. Results from the correlation analysis revealed a significant positive association between: board governance and perceived performance; distributor competence and perceived performance. This implies that, perceived performance at JMS is associated with board governance and distributor competence. A multiple regression analysis revealed that distributor competence significantly and positively predicts perceived performance at JMS, while board governance does not significantly influence perceived performance. Mediation results indicate that the relationship between distributor competence and perceived performance of JMS is indirectly and partially mediated by board governance. This implies that distributor competence enhances perceived performance and this is partially due to the role of board governance. The study recommends that management should improve distributor competence by enhancing competence of staff at JMS to ensure timely delivery; quality drugs and medical supplies are delivered to health facilities. While the board should continue playing its role to enhance distributor competence.
