Project Complexity, Project Planning, and Quality of Building Projects in Kampala.
(Makerere University Business School, 2025-04-09) Ssebulime, Willy
This study examined the relationship between project complexity, project planning, and the quality of building projects in Kampala, Uganda, using a cross-sectional research design. A sample of 196 construction companies was drawn from 396 registered under the Uganda National Association of Builders, Suppliers, and Engineering Contractors. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire targeting project managers and technical officers, capturing both strategic and operational insights. The study utilized descriptive and inferential statistics, including Pearson’s correlation and multiple regression analysis, to assess the impact of project complexity and planning on building quality. Findings revealed significant variations in quality outcomes across different building project types, highlighting the influence of planning practices and complexity management on construction quality. Ensuring data validity and reliability through expert review and a Cronbach’s Alpha test, the study addressed ethical considerations around privacy and confidentiality and provided critical insights into the Kampala construction industry. The results offer valuable implications for stakeholders seeking to enhance quality outcomes in urban building projects through improved project planning and complexity management. The findings indicated that while project complexity has a minimal and non-significant impact on project quality, effective project planning plays a substantial role in achieving high-quality outcomes. The regression analysis revealed that project planning significantly contributes to project quality, explaining a notable portion of the variance, while project complexity appears less critical. These results underscore the importance of investing in thorough planning processes, including resource allocation, risk management, and scheduling, to ensure successful project execution. The study highlights project planning as a primary driver of quality in building projects, offering valuable insights for construction firms, project managers, and policymakers aiming to enhance construction standards in Kampala. Future research could explore additional factors, such as regulatory influences and technological integration, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of project quality determinants
