Intellectual Capital, Procurement Practices, And Local Content Participation in Road Construction Sector in Uganda.
(Makerere University Business School, 2024-10-30) Mbaziira, Joseph
The research aimed to examine the interplay among intellectual capital, procurement practices, and local content participation within Uganda’s road construction industry. Basing on the following objectives; to investigate the connection between intellectual capital and involvement in local content within Uganda's road construction sector, to assess the connection between procurement practices and local content participation in the road construction sector in Uganda, to analyze the combined influence of intellectual capital and procurement practices on local content participation within the road construction sector in Uganda. The study employs a cross-sectional research design, utilizing a quantitative approach. The study involved sampling 92 privately-owned indigenous road construction enterprises situated in Central Uganda, specifically in Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono districts. Following the criteria outlined by Krejcie and Morgan (1970), a stratified random sampling technique was employed. Data was collected by the questionnaire. Data analysis was then performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The analysis involved descriptive statistics, ANOVA, correlation analysis, regression analysis. The study confirms that both intellectual capital and procurement practices significantly impact local content participation in Uganda's road construction sector, with procurement practices showing a particularly strong influence. Intellectual capital alone accounts for 30.1% of the variability in local content participation, while procurement practices explain a substantial 66.7%. When combined, these factors account for 72% of the variability, though the interaction between them is complex. Procurement practices consistently show a positive influence, whereas intellectual capital's effect is more nuanced, suggesting the need for tailored strategies to maximize its benefits alongside procurement improvements. To enhance local content participation in Uganda's road construction sector, construction companies should invest in employee training and optimize procurement practices, focusing on local sourcing and supplier engagement. Industry stakeholders and associations should promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the development of specialized training programs to align intellectual capital with procurement efforts.
